Memphis-Shelby County Schools' Student Congress released a special message regarding the untimely death of Tyre Nichols. See their video message and letter below.
Greetings,
We, the Memphis-Shelby County Schools’ Student Congress, are devastated and appalled by the tragedy that ended Mr. Tyre Nichols’ life. We are continuing to uplift the family and friends of Mr. Nichols. In the wake of this tragedy, there is no greater time than now to put aside our differences and unite to seek much needed reforms. To experience this in our city, county, and nation is heartbreaking and painful.
The video that was released last weekend showed a horrific and unacceptable assault against all humanity. We thank the Memphis Police Department, the TBI, and the District Attorney’s office in taking swift action regarding this matter. Yet in the midst of despair, we are optimistic that justice will be served for Mr. Nichols and his family. We urge everyone to keep the Nichols family in your thoughts and prayers in their time of bereavement.
Undoubtedly, there is work that needs to be done in our city, county, and nation; however, it will take all of us to work with each other to spread love and spark a revival of policing in America. We must all make an effort to support, respect, and uplift one another. Nevertheless, we, the members of the MSCS Student Congress and the future leaders of this city, have hope in this perilous time in our nation. We are optimistic that Mr. Nichols’ family will receive justice. While also remaining content to work with city and county leaders to implement strategies to ease the agonizing pain in our communities. We know that the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County will unify to create the needed change. And hopefully, our classmates, educators, families, friends, brothers, sisters, and everyone near and far will come together to heal from this tragic event.
