Memphis-TN Grahamwood Elementary recently hosted a lively ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the installation of two new GaGa Pits, which have quickly become a favorite feature among students. The event brought together students, teachers, parents, and community leaders, all eager to see the new addition to the school’s outdoor space. With cheers and excitement filling the air, the ceremony highlighted not only the joy these new GaGa Pits would bring to over 950 students but also the power of community support in bringing such meaningful projects to life.
Grahamwood parent Amy Schrader extended heartfelt gratitude to those who helped fund the project, especially to Grahamwood parents, District 8 School Board Member Amber Huett-Garcia and Shelby County Commissioner Michael Whaley. “This project wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support from our community,” said Schrader.
Attendees enjoyed a short demonstration of GaGa ball, an energetic, fast-paced game that the students love. P.E. Teachers praised the GaGa Pits as a much-needed addition to Grahamwood, where outdoor space is especially valued. Schrader expressed her excitement, saying, “At Grahamwood, having spaces like these is incredibly important because we don’t have a gym. Our kids need a place to come out, get the giggles out, and have recess with their teachers. Each GaGa Pit holds 20 students, so now teachers can bring out an entire class. It’s exactly what our kids needed to stay active and have fun.”
Community leaders shared similar sentiments about the project’s significance. Commissioner Whaley stated, “I am always excited to collaborate with schools in my district alongside parents, teachers, and staff to find ways to improve the school experience. Having quality outdoor spaces like this is incredibly beneficial. It doesn’t take much to create these experiences, but our kids deserve these opportunities. I’m happy to support them now and in the future.”
Board Member Huett-Garcia echoed her enthusiasm, emphasizing the link between physical activity and overall well-being. “As both a board member and a parent of a Grahamwood third grader, supporting outdoor play equipment is personally meaningful to me. When kids have spaces to play safely, compete, and enjoy being active, it brings them joy and leads to better academic outcomes. Physical health is deeply connected to emotional and social health, and anything we can put in place to support that is a worthwhile investment.” The ribbon-cutting ceremony at Grahamwood Elementary was a true celebration of community support, showcasing the impact that collaborative efforts have on students’ well-being and success.
