Bethel Grove Elementary is joining other schools in the district for the “Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day,” a very important tribute to a well-renowned African American activist who courageously defeated the rules of segregation and society as a young girl, marking an iconic moment in the Civil Rights Movement.
According to history, Ruby Bridges was only six years old when, on November 14, 1960, she decided to walk to an all-white elementary school in New Orleans, Louisiana, in order to integrate it. A group of U.S. Marshals accompanied her to protect her as she walked.
The “Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day” is celebrated nationwide as a tribute or educational activity to commemorate the bravery of that young girl and the enormous impact she made in achieving equal education. This date also serves to highlight the importance of integration and civil rights.
This event at Bethel Elementary will take place on November 14, at 9 AM. Students are encouraged to wear purple tops with uniform bottoms on that day.
