MSCS: Committed to Building a Legacy of Leaders

Student engagement is a priority of leadership at Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), and events like a Legacy Builders gathering on Friday, February 14, provide a space for students to connect with other students throughout the district and engage directly with senior leadership.

With more than 200 middle and high school students gathered at the Bridges USA Auditorium, senior leadership fielded questions on a wide range of topics – from social-emotional learning to school safety. No questions were off the table to ensure that students felt heard, valued, and empowered to be both part of the conversation and an agent for change within the district.

In addition to the larger group discussion and an extensive Q&A, students participated in breakout sessions, where they engaged in conversations with one another and collaborated on ideas for improving their school experiences.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Roderick Richmond also attended the event, highlighting his commitment to prioritizing student voices. He had a brief one-on-one conversation with a student, making it clear that his goal as interim superintendent is to create “an environment and community that we can all be proud of.”

Each Legacy Builders event reminds us of the importance of listening to our students and valuing their input. As a district, these conversations lay the foundation for a future where every voice matters.
