District 7: Bridging the Information Gap Between Parents and Schools – Families Connect

Memphis, TN – On Thursday, March 27, the “Families Connect” program at Cromwell Elementary School wrapped up its final session for the 2024-25 school year.

The event, hosted by the multilingual communications department of Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), focused on the dangers of social media. The presentation highlighted both the positive and negative aspects of social media use among children. MSCS representatives provided practical safety tips for parents, such as enabling parental controls and establishing time limits on children’s electronic devices.

The session served as an interactive opportunity for district leaders, teachers, and families to engage in meaningful dialogue. Tania Hernandez, a parent at Cromwell Elementary, shared that she purchased a tablet for her son and specifically set it up for children. Before her son could download any applications, Hernandez received a notification on her phone to approve or deny the download. “Measures like this help keep my son and family safe,” Hernandez said.

Wendy Mejia, another Cromwell parent, reflected on her favorite part of the session – learning about the potential dangers of social media. “As parents, it’s important to be mindful of what our children are exposed to on social media and to adjust device settings to limit screen time,” said Mejia.

Following the session, participants enjoyed a meal prepared by Cromwell parents, fostering a sense of community and connection. Initiatives like “Families Connect” are helping bridge the information gap between parents and schools. By offering valuable resources, such as social media tools, MSCS continues its commitment to fostering excellence and empowering families.

We are looking forward to celebrating the accomplishment of parents at Cromwell at their graduation on May 8.
