MEMPHIS, TN (MSCS) – The University of Memphis’ Department of World Languages and Literatures held its “2025 World Language Fair” on Saturday, March 29. The annual event took place in the University Center, where high school students from several schools, including Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) were able to demonstrate their extraordinary skills in languages like Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, and even Latin.
Among the high schools that represented MSCS were East, Germantown, Kingsbury, Middle College, Southwind, White Station and Whitehaven; Germantown and White Station were the top winners, with over 40 medals each. The other schools that participated include Bartlett High School, Houston High School, Hutchison School, Memphis University School, Munford High School, and St. George’s Independent School.
The students competed in different categories such as crafts, dance, greeting cards, infographics, music, poetry recitation, quizzes, research projects, speech, and vocabulary. Some of these categories were divided into up to four levels as well.
But the students are not the only ones that competed to be rewarded, as there was a very important award that the University of Memphis (UofM) gives every year: “The World Language Teacher of the Year Award,” which was presented to Liliana Torres, a Spanish teacher from Germantown High School.
“I am very happy, especially because three of my students won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place on the quiz (in Spanish), which represents their knowledge of the Spanish language and how much they’ve learned,” said Ms. Torres.
Congratulations to all for participating and making this competition as successful as always; to the MSCS’ students and teachers, we are proud of you for doing an outstanding job. Knowledge is power, but when you know more than one language, that is even more powerful.
