MSCS Board Chair Althea Greene released an update to families, staff, and the community to announce the start of the onboarding process for incoming superintendent, Dr. Marie Feagins. To learn more about this important transition, read the full story below.
The Memphis-Shelby County Schools Board will formally start the onboarding process for the next MSCS superintendent, Dr. Marie Feagins, on Friday, March 1, 2024.
We developed a timeline for this important transition process. An eight-week period aligns with timelines for the transitions of previous District superintendents.
It also aligns with the following considerations:
- Budget planning is underway. Having Dr. Feagins on the ground as soon as possible will provide input and help prepare her for a positive new school year.
- The Tennessee State Legislature is in session and will allow Dr. Feagins an opportunity to build relationships in Nashville with one of our major funders.
- With overwhelming community support, Dr. Feagins needs to be in Memphis building important relationships within our communities and schools.
- Finally, Dr. Feagins is excited to be here now to start making Memphis and Shelby County her home.
To start this process as soon as possible, we will have a short-term per diem agreement with Dr. Feagins beginning Friday, March 1, followed by a plan to ask the Board to vote on her permanent contract at the next Board meeting.
If approved, effective Monday, April 1, 2024, Dr. Feagins will officially become the superintendent of the District.
Finally, I want to acknowledge my colleagues for allowing me to lead during this historic time. I am grateful for their collaborative spirit that prioritizes the best interest of our students and the bright future of our District.
-Althea Greene, Chair of the Shelby County Board of Education
